Ostiguy Impresses in Car Racing Debut at Laguna Seca!

Matt Ostiguy showed good speed in his car racing debut in a JBR Motorsports Radical

MONTEREY, CALIF. (June, 2011) - Matt Ostiguy finished second and third in his first ever Radical Unlimited Le Mans Prototype sports car races with JBR Motorsports in the Radical Challenge at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif., during the last weekend in June.

Ostiguy drove the Radical SR8 Le Mans Prototype that produces 460 HP from a 2.7-liter V8 engine and shifts its power through a six-speed-paddle-shifted gearbox. Ostiguy arrived at Laguna Seca on Friday and met the JBR Motorsports team for his first practice sessions at the track.

Racing legend and founder of JBR Motorsports Jim Busby coached Ostiguy all weekend, and President/Chief Engineer Jim Stepan worked with him and his Racing Engineer/Radio Man Chris Sheffer (from Indianapolis with experience at several different Indy 500 Teams).

Ostiguy was one of the top-six quickest cars out of 18 in total on Friday during practice, his first day ever on the Laguna Seca circuit. On Saturday, he had to switch to a new back-up car due to mechanical issues and had a tough qualifying session. He qualified 10th out of 18 cars, although he was one of the top-five quickest earlier in the day during practice.

On Saturday, during his first race-ever other than in a kart, Ostiguy passed five cars and moved up to the fifth position, but half way through the race he made a mistake in turn 11 and went off the track briefly, before finishing in ninth place overall, second in his racing class - Radical (SR8 LM) Unlimited.

Ostiguy was confident he would do better on Sunday, and qualified fifth out of 19 cars! The JBR Motorsports Team cars all lined-up behind one another in the race, with Mark Abrahams on pole, Kevin Weeda in third, and Ostiguy in fifth, in the thrid row.

During the race, Ostiguy moved up to fourth place about half way through the race, but got a little over zealous as he saw the three leading cars in front of him and spun out in turn five at over 110+ mph! He was able to keep the car on the track and more importantly out of the tire barriers, but finished 11th overall, third in his racing class – Radical (SR8 LM) Unlimited.

The JBR Motorsports Team on Sunday, won the race, with Weeda taking the victory, ahead of Abrahams in sixth (fourth place in his racing class – Radical SR3 LM). Ostiguy en route to his 11th place finish overall and third in his racing class posted the fastest lap in the race by three tenths!

“Matt out performed our expectations, especially since it was his first races ever in the Radical car or any car for that matter,” Jim Busby commented. “We look forward to him continuing his success in racing cars!”

Jim Busby Racing and JBR Motorsports from Laguna Beach, Calif., has been a fully functioning race shop since 1969, turning out world-class race cars that have fielded victories at races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring and the Monza 1000k.

Stepan, President of JBR Motorsports, has many years of professional racing experience with ALMS and Indy Car Teams, working with drivers such as Bobby Rahal, Michael Andretti, Bryan Herta, Dario Franchitti, and Tony Kanaan.

Ostiguy has raced karts since he was 13 years old, starting at F1 Boston and F1 Outdoors in New England. After winning several Junior Karting Championships and his team earning the vice-championship in the GT Pro Class in the (6 hour) Endurance Karting Championship on the East Coast, he relocated back to San Diego, where he was born. His team also participated in several 24 Hours of America Endurance Kart races at the Palm Beach International Raceway (formerly the Moroso Motorsports Park). He was also invited to participate on the USA Team in the 24 Hours of Le Mans kart race in France in 2007, finishing an impressive 5th place against some of the top teams in Europe, including the Honda Factory team.

He was the vice-champion in the Los Angeles Karting Championships in the Rotax Senior class in 2007 and 2008, and he won the Championship in the Gatorz Eyewear Golden State Karting Cup in the Rotax DD2 class in 2009 and 2010. He also finished fourth in the Rotax DD2 class at the U.S. Nationals in Norman, Oklahoma in 2009, missing the podium by one spot and advancing to the Rotax World Finals, also known as the Olympics of karting.

April, 2011 - Matt Ostiguy was invited to test the Radical SR3 and SR8 Le Mans Prototype sportscars with JBR Motorsports at the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, a 2.7 mile track in Desert Center, CA.

The first test in the high-performance race cars for the talented California karter was in the morning in the Radical SR3. While the majority of the session was spent learning the road course, the race car and getting acclimated to the speed and grip levels, Ostiguy ended the morning test showing good speed and control.

After lunch in the team's hospitality area, Ostiguy returned to action on-course, getting behind the wheel of the JBR's more powerful Radical SR8 entry. Quickly coming to grips wtih the 460 horsepower from the 2.7 liter V8 engine and six-speed-paddle-shifted gearbox, the Californian continued to impress both team Founder Jim Busby and team President and racing engineer, Jim Stepan.

"We really enjoyed working with Matt and believe he has an unusual level of poise and skill for a driver with little experience in a very fast race car," said Busby. "Matt has a bright future in racing if he continues to show the ability we saw at our trial day. The tech side of his racing will only grow while Matt pursues his engineering studies and combines it with his racing skills - he will go a long way in the sport."
